You will require this licence if you intend to deal with a regulated radiation source.
A person is taken to have dealt with a radiation source if they:
- Manufacture a radiation source;
- Possess a radiation source;
- Supply a radiation source to someone else;
- Use a radiation source;
- Dispose of a radiation source; or
- Store, pack or transport radioactive material.
Exemptions exist for undergraduate or postgraduate students who are undertaking course work or research in a university, or other education institution.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.
To be eligible for this licence you must submit an application that may include:
- Information about the proposed dealings under the licence;
- The qualifications of people proposed to be dealing with the radiation source;
- Proposed procedures for handling, use or storage of the radiation source; and
- A proposed safety plan for dealings under the licence.
Pre-application discussions are recommended, as there are mandatory qualifications relating to radiation protection required by applicants.

Licences are usually issued for 1 year, however up to 3 year licences may be available subject to some limitations.
