Service summary

You will require this licence if you intend to research the growing or supplying of industrial, class A or class B hemp plants and seeds for use in plant breeding programs for developing new commercial strains of industrial hemp.

There are two categories of licences:

  • Category 1: authorises you to possess industrial, Class A and Class B hemp plants and seeds;
  • Category 2: authorises you to possess industrial and Class B hemp plants and seeds.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for a this licence you must:

  • Apply in writing to the Agency, including all information that may be required;
  • Have acquired the necessary educational or other qualifications and experience to engage in plant breeding or other research;
  • Not be bankrupt or personally insolvent;
  • Have a clear conviction record for a minimum of 5 years in relation to drugs; and
  • Pay the relevant application fees.

Your application is to be lodged directly with the Agency, and must include information establishing that you are eligible to obtain the licence, and that you are of good repute.
