Bookmaker Company Licence (Thoroughbred Racing) - Australian Capital Territory

Service summary

You will require this licence if you intend to form a bookmaker company. Bookmakers operate at race meetings, in approved auditoriums or betting premises during pre-determined hours to offer bets on racings events. Bookmaker companies may operate at more than one race meeting at the same time, or on more than one stand at a race meeting. This licence permits your company to take bets face to face, via recorded phone calls, and the internet.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence:

  • Your company must be a registered company under commonwealth legislation;
  • You must lodge a bookmaker company financial statement;
  • You must submit the application form and pay the required fees;
  • Each director must be a fit and proper person for the purpose of the licence;
  • Each director, shareholder and person concerned in the management of the company must be at least 21 years of age; and
  • Each director must hold an individual bookmaker licence.

Further restrictions apply to directors with interests in other businesses.
