You will require this licence if you intend to breed female cats or dogs in ACT for the purpose of selling them for a profit. Once you have been issued with this licence you will receive a letter that contains your breeding licence number. You are required to display this number in any advertisements for the sale of puppies and kittens that you have bred.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.
The following information will be considered as part of your application:
- The number and kind of animals you keep at the breeding premises;
- The size and nature of the premises;
- The suitability of facilities on the premises for keeping and breeding dogs or cats;
- The potential impact on the occupiers of neighbouring premises;
- Whether you are a member of a recognised breeding organisation; and
- Whether you have had any offences under relevant legislation in the last 10 years.

A breeding licence is in force unless it is surrendered or cancelled.
