Service summary

You will require this licence if you intend to use or breed animals for the purposes of research and / or teaching at a stated premises. This licence is not required if the animal is to be used for teaching purposes in a preschool or primary school and is listed in schedule 2 of the attached regulation. Animals exempt from this licence include, but are not limited to:

  • Mice;
  • Goldfish;
  • Budgerigars;
  • Frogs; and
  • Rabbits.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence you must:

  • Submit an application form;
  • Demonstrate experience and competency in caring for and handling animals;
  • Have adequate premises, equipment and other facilities required for caring for and handling animals;
  • Hold a teaching and / or research authorisation from the Agency;
  • Not have been convicted or found guilty of an offence related to animal welfare within the last three years; and
  • Pay any required fees.
