You may be required to comply with this international convention if you intend to work within wetlands and waterfowl.
This convention is also known as the Ramsar Convention. It seeks to:
- Promote conservation of wetlands and waterfowl;
- Establish nature reserves on wetlands;
- Provide adequately for their protection and management; and
- Train personnel in the field of wetlands research and management.
If you engage in an activity covered by Division 2 (Inspection of Land), Division 3 (Installation of Facilities) or Division 4 (Maintenance of Facilities), you must do so in a manner that is consistent with Australia's obligations under a listed international agreement that is relevant to the activity. The objectives to be met in relation to this international commitment would include identification of any wetlands of international importance and ensuring appropriate management and land use recommendations in relation to those wetlands.
Please consult the Contact Officer for more information and to ascertain the level of compliance (if any) that may be required.
Code of Practice
A code of practice can be either a legal requirement or non-legal requirement. Legal codes of practice are defined as a result of legislation. Non-legal codes of practice are defined by industry regulators and bodies.
