Certificate of Recognition - Australian Government

Description

You will require this certificate if you intend to work onboard a regulated Australian vessel, domestic commercial vessel or a recreational vessel that has Australian nationality with foreign issued certificates or qualifications.

A certificate of recognition allows you to work in Australia without having to complete some or all of the required courses because it recognises the skills you already have.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for a certificate of recognition from a country with which Australia has a recognition agreement, you must:

  • hold a current certificate of medical fitness
  • hold a certificate issued by a marine administration in a country other than Australia that is either approved by Australia or compliant with the International Convention
  • provide evidence that you have completed practical training or short courses that are equivalent to the Australian certificate of competency
  • for deck or engineer officer duties, have passed an oral examination
  • for deck officer duties, hold a current General Operators Certificate
  • be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or provide proof of upcoming employment in a regulated Australian vessel.
