You will require this certificate if you intend to work onboard a regulated Australian vessel, domestic commercial vessel or a recreational vessel that has Australian nationality with foreign issued certificates or qualifications.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

Australia has recognition agreements in place with many countries. To be eligible for a certificate of recognition from one of those countries you must:

  • Hold a current certificate of medical fitness;
  • Hold a certificate issued by a marine administration in a country other than Australia that is either STCW Convention compliant or approved by Australia;
  • Provide evidence that you have completed practical training or short courses that are equivalent to the Australian certificate of competency;
  • For deck or engineer officer duties, have passed an oral examination;
  • For deck officer duties, hold a current General Operators Certificate; and
  • Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or proof of upcoming employment in a regulated Australian vessel.
