Licence to Cultivate and Produce Medicinal Cannabis - Australian Government

Service summary

You will require this licence if you intend to grow or cultivate medicinal cannabis. It is important to note that cannabis may only be grown under this licence for medicinal purposes only. You will be required to hold additional licensing with your State or Territory Government if you intend to grow industrial hemp.

There are two kinds of licence you may apply for:

  • A medicinal cannabis licence allows for the cultivation and / or production of medicinal cannabis for the purpose of supplying cannabis product manufacturers.
  • A cannabis research licence allows for the cultivation and / or production of medicinal cannabis for research purposes into its medicinal properties.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To apply for one of these licences you must:

  • be a fit and proper person
  • prove that there is a producer or manufacturer who will buy any raw materials you produce
  • provide details of your business and proposed cultivation site
  • complete the required form
  • pay the prescribed fees.
