Adopted National Exposure Standards for Atmospheric Contaminants in the Occupational Environment [NOHSC: 1003 (1995)] - Australian Government

Service summary

You will be required to comply with this code if you are the operator of a ship that is engaged in trade or commerce:

  • Between Australia and places outside Australia;
  • Between two places outside Australia; or
  • Between the States of Australia; or
  • Within a Territory, or between a State and a Territory or between 2 Territories.

This includes a vessel that is licensed to engage in coastal trade, and certain offshore industry vessels.

The operator of a ship must ensure that no employee or contractor is exposed to an airborne concentration of a hazardous substance in excess of the relevant exposure standard while working on the ship. In particular, before a person enters a confined space, the operator of a ship must ensure that airborne contaminants in the confined space are at a level below the relevant exposure standards. If the airborne contaminants in the confined space cannot be reduced to a level below the relevant exposure standard, the operator of the ship must provide any person entering the confined space with appropriate air respiratory equipment.

Please consult the Contact Officer for more information and to ascertain the level of compliance (if any) that may be required.
