Aeronautical Radio Operator Certificate - Australian Government

Service summary

You will require this certificate if you do not hold a pilot licence but intend to operate a radiocommunication system that is installed in or carried on an aircraft either in flight or on the ground.

You will also require this certificate if you are the operator of an unmanned aircraft.

The certificate covers the use of the device:

  • During flight time;
  • When the aircraft is on the ground; and
  • When the device is used in connection with an aircraft.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this certificate you must:

  • Be at least 17 years of age;
  • Have completed the required examinations;
  • Meet the competency standards specified in the Part 61 Manual of Standards for the operation of an aeronautical radio;
  • Provide a current aviation English language proficiency assessment.

You can also apply to have your radio operator licence or certificate issued by the competent authority in any country or by the Australian Defence Force converted.

If you hold an overseas radio operator licence that the Agency considers is equivalent to this certificate then you are also eligible to be granted this certificate.
