Approval of Recovery Facilities - Australian Government

Service summary

You will be required to apply for this approval if you intend to operate a facility that carries out recovery operations on hazardous waste that have been imported into Australia.

Hazardous waste are generally characterised such as being:

  • Flammable;
  • Explosive;
  • Poisonous;
  • Toxic;
  • Exotoxic; and / or
  • Infectious.

They include but are not limited to:

  • Residues arising from industrial waste disposal operations;
  • Metal ash and residues;
  • Used batteries;
  • Electronic scrap;
  • Waste chemicals;
  • Clinical waste;
  • Solid plastic waste; and
  • Waste oils.
