Certificate of Rating - Australian Government

Service summary

You will require this certificate if you intend to work on board regulated Australian vessel, domestic commercial vessel or a recreational vessel that has Australian nationality.

There are three kinds of Rating Certificates available:

  • Certificate of Rating as Able Seaman;
  • Certificate of Rating as Deck Rating; and
  • Certificate of Rating as Engine Room Rating.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible as an Able Seaman you must:

  • Have completed 12 months sea service while holding a Deck Rating Certificate;
  • Hold a Steering Certificate; and
  • Hold a Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats.

To be eligible for a Deck Rating you must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age;
  • Complete approved pre-sea training courses;
  • Complete 12 months sea service with any duties connected with keeping a navigation watch; and
  • Hold a Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats.

To be eligible for an Engine Room Rating you must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age;
  • Complete approved pre-sea training courses; and
  • Complete 6 months sea service with any duties connected with keeping an engine room watch.
