High Seas Fishing Permit - Australian Government

Service summary

You will require this permit if you intend to fish commercially for species on the high seas outside the Australian Fishing Zone, which generally extends 200 nautical miles from the coast.

Permits specify the area of operation, the boat being used and conditions, including restrictions on species taken. This permit may also be granted for the carrying or processing of fish taken by another boat.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence you must specify:

  • The details of the boat;
  • The purpose of the operations (such as fishing, carrying or process);
  • Proposed target species; and
  • The fishing gear to be used for the operations.

Your boat must also be equipped with a vessel monitoring system.
