Offshore Petroleum Exploration Permit - Australian Government

Description

You will require this permit if you intend to mine for petroleum at sea. This permit provides an exclusive right to explore within a permit zone for areas suitable for petroleum extraction or for potential greenhouse gas storage formations. It also allows exploration, works and operations in the permit area for a potential greenhouse gas injection site.

You can apply for two types of permit:

  • Work-bid petroleum exploration permit
  • Cash-bid petroleum exploration permit.
  • Cross-boundary petroleum exploration permit.

Please note that there are a limited number of permits. Work-bid permits are offered to the most deserving applicant while cash-bid permits are offered to the highest bidder.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

Applications for offshore petroleum and greenhouse gas storage exploration should be accompanied with:

  • estimated expenditure (such as seismic surveys, exploration wells etc.)
  • your technical expertise
  • the adequacy of your financial resources to meet work obligations.

You must provide a Title Assessment Report to show you have made a significant attempt to assess the petroleum potential of the permit area.

The report must be provided within 30 days of the anniversary of the title being awarded or at any time required by the Agency. Information required in the report varies depending on the scope of your operations.

Duration

Initial term 6 years; can be renewed for two 5 year periods or as deemed appropriate.
