Australian International Shipping Register - Australian Government

Description

You will require this registration if you operate a ship in Australian waters for the purpose of international trade.

The purpose of the International Register is to provide an alternative to registering overseas for Australian companies that own or operate ships overseas. Inclusion on the International Register is optional for owners and operators that are predominantly engaged in international trading.

If your ship is over 24 metres in tonnage length you must fly the Australian Red Ensign. All other registered ships may fly either the Australian National Flag or the Red Ensign.

Eligibility requirements

Eligible vessels are international trading ships that are at least 24 metres in tonnage length and:

  • owned by Australian residents, or by Australian residents and Australian nationals
  • operated solely by Australian residents, Australian nationals, or both
  • on demise charter to Australian based operators.

To be eligible to receive this registration, you must:

  • Submit an application providing information about the ship, boat or vessel you are registering;
  • Provide a declaration of ownership and nationality;
  • Provide notice of appointment of a registered agent of the ship; and
  • Provide identification documentation for the ship, boat or vessel that is either from the last place of registration or the manufacturer (builder's certificate).
