Appointment as a Designated Aviation Medical Examiner (DAME) - Australian Government

Service summary

You will require this appointment if you are a suitably qualified medical practitioner and you intend to provide medical examination services to individuals who are applying for aviation licences.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this appointment you must provide:

  • The appointment application form;
  • Evidence of competence in aviation medicine;
  • A copy of your resume;
  • Your Aviation Reference Number (ARN);
  • A certified copy of your medical practitioner registration;
  • A certified copy of your aviation medicine qualification; and
  • A certified copy of your Australasian Society of Aerospace Medicine membership certificate (not required if practicing outside Australia).

All medical officers who have an overseas qualification, who want to work in Australia as a DAME will also need to complete the 1 day regulatory training through Monash University.

If you have previously been appointed as a designated aviation medical examiner, and the previous appointment was cancelled, you must include with the application any available evidence to show that you can now properly exercise the powers or perform the functions of the appointment sought.

Please note that applicants are expected to undertake continued professional education.
