Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme Prescriber Registration / Number - AG - Australian Business Licence and Information Service

Description

You will require this approval if you are a registered health professional and you intend to prescribe medicines under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). A PBS prescriber number will enable you to prescribe medication under the PBS.

You will be able to receive a prescriber number if you work in one of the following health professions:

general and medical practitioners
nurse practitioners
midwives
dentists
optometrists.

This may be permitted in an area where the community does not have a convenient and efficient pharmaceutical service.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this approval you must:

be registered with the national board relevant to your health profession and / or Australian Health Professional Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
provide written confirmation that you have been endorsed to prescribe medication from your state or territory registration authority
have successfully undertaken an approved prescribing qualification
be working from a location where no pharmacist is operating within a reasonable distance.

You cannot receive a prescriber number if you are an allied health professional.

You will need more than one prescriber number if you provide services in multiple health professions.

Ongoing; however, you will need to reapply if you change locations
