NSW Driver's Licence - New South Wales

Service summary

You will require this licence if you intend to drive a motor vehicle on public roads in New South Wales. Licences vary depending on the class of vehicle you intend to drive. Classes of vehicle for which licences may be obtained include:

  • Cars;
  • Motorcycles;
  • Light rigid vehicles;
  • Medium rigid vehicles;
  • Heavy rigid vehicles;
  • Heavy combination vehicles; and
  • Multi-combination vehicles.

Each class of licence encompasses a number of stages through which you must progress before obtaining a full licence. You may be required to demonstrate various skills to progress to a particular stage. For example, in order to obtain a car licence you are required to pass tests to obtain a learner's licence, a provisional P1 licence and a provisional P2 licence.

If you have recently moved to New South Wales, you have three months to arrange to obtain a New South Wales driver's or rider's licence. Please note that this process may be different for individuals who hold driver's licences in other states or countries.

You must ensure that any individuals you employ to drive vehicles in New South Wales hold the appropriate licences.
