Body Art Tattoo Business - Operator Licence - New South Wales

Service summary

If you intend to operate a body art tattooing business (whether on your own behalf or on behalf of another person) you will require this licence. If you intend to operate multiple tattoo businesses in different locations you will need a separate licence for each location.

Only an individual can apply for this licence. If the application is in connection with a business that is owned, or operated by, or on behalf of a corporation, partnership or trust, the application must be made by an individual nominated by the corporation, partners or trustees, to be the manager at the business premises.

Please be aware that it is an offence to employ a person as a body art tattooist if they do not hold a current Tattooist Licence.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.


Cosmetic tattoo procedures are exempt from requiring this licence.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence individuals must:

  • be at least 18 years of age
  • be an Australian citizen or resident
  • be a fit and proper person (this will include a national police check)
  • not be a controlled member of a declared organisation under the Crimes (Criminal Organisations Control) Act 2012.

Please be aware that as part of the application process your fingerprints and palm prints will be recorded by NSW Police.

If the details you supply as part of your application change while your application is being considered then you have seven business days to supply notice of the change or you may be fined.
