Certificate of Compliance for Domestic Solid Fuel Heaters - New South Wales

Service summary

You may require a certificate of compliance if you have designed or manufactured a domestic solid fuel heater in NSW. Each heater model sold in NSW must have a certificate of compliance. The certificate is required for slow combustion type domestic solid fuel heaters as they have the potential to emit significant amounts of smoke if not designed and operated correctly.

A certificate of compliance certifies that the heater has been tested in accordance with the Australian Standard and therefore meets the emissions limits outlined in the standard. These certificates are issued on the basis of test results from an accredited laboratory.

This certificate does not apply to the wholesale and retail sale of heaters of the following kind:

  • A masonry appliance built on site;
  • A central heating appliance;
  • A cooking stove appliance as defined in Australian Standard 4013;
  • An appliance intended for use solely for heating water;
  • An appliance intended for use solely for distributing heat through ducts;
  • A pellet heater.
