Offshore Retention Lease for Petroleum - New South Wales

Service summary

If you hold an exploration permit for petroleum you can apply for a lease to undertake commercial petroleum mining on specified blocks. This lease applies to activities within three nautical miles from the NSW coast.

This lease allows you to explore and recover petroleum, as well to carry out operations and works within the leased area. This lease is granted if the recovery of petroleum is not currently commercially viable, but is likely to become commercially viable within 15 years.

Please be aware that a lease may be granted subject to conditions. Types of conditions include conditions with respect to work carried out in the specified area, or the amounts expended.

Eligibility requirements

Your application must include:

  • particulars of the proposal of work and expenditure in respect of the area comprised in the blocks specified in the application
  • particulars of the commercial viability of the recovery of petroleum from the area comprised in the blocks specified in the application
  • any matter you want to be considered
  • the prescribed fee.
