Bus Operator Accreditation - New South Wales

Service summary

You will require this accreditation if you intend to operate a public passenger transport service that carries passengers in buses or coaches for a fare or other consideration. This accreditation applies to operators of vehicles that seat more than eight passengers. Your service is required to confirm to at least one of the following four categories:

  • Regular passenger service;
  • Long distance service;
  • Tourist service; and
  • Charter service.

This accreditation system is used to assess whether you are of suitable character and fitness and that you have the competency to operate a public passenger transport service in accordance with the standards and conditions prescribed by the legislation.

Please be aware that any driver of a bus must also be authorised as a driver. Further conditions may apply.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this accreditation you must:

  • Be of good repute, supplied by two character references (two individuals who have known you for more than two years);
  • Be fit and proper for the purpose of accreditation;
  • Demonstrate that you possess the necessary knowledge and level of competency to operate a bus service;
  • Be financially viable to operate a passenger bus service, demonstrated via a credit report from an accountant;
  • Have access to adequate maintenance facilities for the vehicles;
  • Have written approval from the applicable local council;
  • Pay any required fees and submit the application form.

If you intend to apply for accreditation as a corporation, you must nominate at least one director or manager as a responsible representative.

Accreditation remains in force for three years.
