Taxi-Cab Operator Accreditation - New South Wales

Service summary

You will require this accreditation if you intend to operate a taxi-cab service. A taxi-cab service provides passengers with transport in a motor vehicle and charges based on the rate of demand. Once granted this accreditation, you must ensure that any taxis you operate are affiliated with an authorised taxi network and that you comply with the by-laws of that network.

Only vehicles licensed as taxis may provide a taxi service in NSW. All drivers of taxis must also be authorised as a taxi driver.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for accreditation, you must:

  • be a fit and proper person, of good repute
  • provide to the Director General written notice of any convictions or pending convictions or charges yet to go before the courts
  • demonstrate the necessary knowledge and competency to carry on a taxi-cab service
  • undertake and complete any courses relating to the operation of taxi-cab service as approved by the Director General
  • nominate the number of vehicles you intend to operate, the make and registration and vehicle identification numbers of each vehicle, including rented vehicles (if known)
  • provide a credit assessment from an accountant
  • provide details of the premises at which the vehicles will be kept when not available for hire
  • provide details of the premises, repairer and repairer's licence number to be used for maintenance and repairs of the vehicles.

Your application must be supported by documents that confirm your character, identity, competency and financial viability.



Evidence of good repute must be provided in the form of two character references from two individuals who have known you for at least two years.
