Ammunition Permits - New South Wales

Description

You will need an ammunition permit if you intend to obtain ammunition for firearms. There are three types of permit:

  • Ammunition Permit - for employees or business partners who have to purchase ammunition for firearms registered to their employer or business partner
  • Ammunition Collection Permit - for those intending to buy or possess ammunition for the purpose of ammunition collection only
  • Ammunition Purchase and Sell Permit - for those intending to possess, acquire or supply ammunition.

Ammunition includes:

  • articles consisting of a cartridge case fitted with a primer and a projectile
  • articles consisting of a cartridge case fitted with a primer and containing a propelling charge and a projectile
  • blank cartridges, air gun pellets, training cartridges or gas cartridges.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible to apply for a permit you must:

  • provide proof of identity (if no other NSW firearms licence or permit is held or has been held)
  • submit the application form with the requirement documentation
  • submit a business declaration form
  • submit a legitimate reason form with the required documentation
  • pay any required fees.

If you have never held a firearms licence or permit in NSW, or you do not currently hold an equivalent issued firearms licence or permit interstate, you are required to complete a firearms safety training course and provide evidence of this with your application. Further eligibility criteria will vary depending on the type of permit you are applying for.
