Tattooist Licence - New South Wales

Service summary

If you intend to perform any body art tattooing procedure for fee or reward you will require this licence. This licence is required to perform any tattooing procedure even if you are conducting this work in a licensed premise.

The only exception from the requirement to hold a Tattooist Licence is if you hold a Body Art Tattoo Business - Operator Licence under the Tattoo Parlours Act 2012 and perform body art tattooing as a self-employed individual at the premises nominated on the licence.

Body art tattooing is defined as any tattooing for decorative purposes. If you will be only conducting cosmetic tattooing you are exempt from this licence.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence individuals must:

  • be at least 18 years of age
  • be an Australian citizen or resident
  • be a fit and proper person (this will include a national police check)
  • not be a controlled member of a declared organisation under the Crimes (Criminal Organisations Control) Act 2012.

Please be aware that as part of the application process your fingerprints and palm prints will be recorded by NSW Police.

If the details you supply as part of your application change while your application is being considered then you have seven business days to supply notice of the change or you may be fined.
