Mass or Dimension Exemption Permit - New South Wales

Service summary

You will require this permit if you intend to operate a heavy vehicle that does not comply with mass or dimension requirements. This permit applies to class 1 and class 3 heavy vehicles.

Class 1 heavy vehicles include special purpose vehicles, agricultural vehicles, implements and trailers, and oversize overmass vehicles. Examples include:

  • Mobile cranes;
  • Concrete pumps;
  • Fire trucks;
  • Harvesters;
  • Tractors; and
  • A prime mover and extendable trailer.

Class 3 heavy vehicles are heavy vehicles that, together with its load, do not comply with prescribed mass or dimension requirements. Examples include:

  • A truck towing a dog trailer; and
  • A B-double or road train transporting a load wider than dimension requirements.

This permit may apply to one or more heavy vehicles.

A heavy vehicle is a vehicle with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) or aggregate trailer mass (ATV) of more than 4.5 tonnes.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this permit, you must:

  • Apply with the approved form;
  • Pay the prescribed fee;
  • Prove that the heavy vehicle under the exemption permit will not pose a significant safety risk; and
  • Provide any other information requested.

The relevant road managers must also consent to allow the exempt vehicle to travel on their roads.

Conditions relating to the routes, areas or roads that an exempt vehicle intends to travel may be added when granting this permit.

You must ensure that the driver of the exempt heavy vehicle has a copy of the exemption permit in their possession while driving.
