Aquaculture Permit - New South Wales

Service summary

You will require a permit if you intend to undertake aquaculture in NSW. Aquaculture refers to cultivating fish or marine vegetation (including crustaceans, invertebrates, marine plants) for the purpose of sale, trade or barter.

The different classes of permits are listed below:

  • Class A: authorises extensive aquaculture on public water or land that is the subject of an aquaculture lease.
  • Class B: authorises intensive aquaculture on public water or land that is the subject of an aquaculture lease.
  • Class C: authorises extensive aquaculture to be undertaken otherwise than on public water.
  • Class D: authorises intensive aquaculture to be undertaken otherwise than on public water.
  • Class E: authorises extensive freshwater aquaculture to be undertaken at 2 or more privately owned locations otherwise than on public water.
  • Class F: authorises a person to operate a fish pond, tank or other structure with a view to charging members of the public for the right to fish in the pond, tank or structure.
  • Class G: authorises experimental aquaculture to be undertaken.
  • Class H: authorising a fish hatchery to be operated.

Extensive aquaculture is aquaculture undertaken without providing supplementary food for the fish or marine vegetation that are being cultivated. Intensive aquaculture is aquaculture undertaken by providing supplementary food for the fish or marine vegetation that are being cultivated.

  • some activities are exempt from requiring a permit
  • you may require more than one form for each permit.
