Certificate of Admission as a Lawyer - New South Wales

Service summary

You will require a certificate of admission if you intend to operate as a lawyer in order to practise as a solicitor or barrister in New South Wales. Please be aware that this does not entitle you to engage in legal practice. It is a prerequisite for being able to apply for an Australian practising certificate (which entitles you to engage in legal practice).

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for admission you must:

  • be 18 years of age or above
  • be considered fit and proper to be admitted to the Australian legal profession
  • have attained the specified academic qualification prerequisite
  • have satisfactorily completed the prerequisite practical legal training requirements
  • not have already been admitted to the Australian legal profession
  • take an oath of office, or make an affirmation of office, in the required form.
