Public Gate Permit - New South Wales

Service summary

You will require this permit if you intend to erect and maintain a gate that is placed on a public road adjacent to your property. Public gates can only be erected where the public road intersects a boundary fence.

The holder of a public gate permit must ensure that:

  • A notice that complies with the relevant requirements is visible on the gate; and
  • Both the gate and the notice are maintained in good condition.

Please note that it is an offence to construct a bypass or livestock grid at a public gate unless permission has been received from the relevant authority.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this permit you must adhere to Council guidelines. Guidelines include but are not limited to:

  • Electrified gates not being permitted; and
  • Gates on roads with a traffic volume greater than 20 vehicles per day are not permitted unless they are located adjacent to a grid.
