Permit to Purchase Non-Prohibited Firearm on Leaving Australia - New South Wales

Service summary

You will require this permit if you intend to purchase a non-prohibited firearm for the purpose of conveying the firearm out of Australia. This permit does not authorise the permit holder to take physical possession of the firearm. The permit is used to confirm your purchase of the firearm and will only be issued if the Agency is satisfied that you are about to leave Australia.

An authorised firearms dealer or agent is required to deliver the firearm directly to the Australian Customs Service.

You may obtain a permit to purchase the following types of firearms only:

  • Air rifle;
  • Rimfire rifle (not self-loading);
  • Shotgun (not self-loading or pump action);
  • Shotgun / rimfire rifle combination;
  • Muzzle loading firearms (other than pistols);
  • Centre-fire rifle (not self-loading);
  • Shotgun / centre-fire rifle combination; or
  • Pistols.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this permit you must:

  • Submit the application form;
  • Submit a legitimate reason form with the required documentation;
  • Provide proof of identity (if no other NSW firearms licence or permit is held or has been held);
  • Pay the required fee; and
  • Nominate a licensed firearms dealer who will deliver the firearm to customs on your behalf (you must provide the dealers name and firearms dealer licence number).

This permit will only be issued if you are about to leave Australia. Please see the attached documents for further information.

The permit is issued for 7 days, or until the purchase of the firearm, unless surrendered or revoked, whichever occurs first.
