Tow Truck Driver's Certificate - New South Wales

Service summary

You will require this certificate if you intend to drive a tow truck for the purposes of towing motor vehicles. This certificate is required if you intend to do any of the following on a road or road related area:

  • Drive or stand a licensed tow truck;
  • Use, operate or assist in the use or operation of a licensed tow truck; or
  • Drive or stand an unlicensed tow truck for the purpose of towing a motor vehicle for fee or reward.

Please be aware that:

  • You must only carry out the type of towing work authorised on your drivers certificate; and
  • If you intend to carry out accident towing work you will require a towing authorisation.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this certificate you must:

  • Be 18 years old or over;
  • Have a current fully unrestricted NSW driver's licence;
  • Be of good repute and in all other respects a fit and proper person to be the driver of a tow truck;
  • Have sufficient responsibility to drive a tow truck in accordance with law and custom;
  • Have read and understood the criteria, conditions and procedures for authorisation as outlined in the information package; and
  • Pay any required fees and submit the application form.

You may be subject to a criminal record check for the last 10 years and a driving record check from the last 3 years.
