Service summary

You will require this permit if you intend to conduct a sweep or calcutta on an approved event, for entertainment or fundraising purposes. Please be aware that this permit is only required if the total value of ticket sales exceeds $20,000.

A sweep is a game in which a person (a player) buys a ticket for a chance to win, by lot, a participant (horse or other contestant) in an approved event. The prize pool is distributed to the players who hold the successful participants. A calcutta follows the same method as a sweep up to the completion of the draw, where an auction takes place at which all ticket purchasers are entitled to bid for each participant as it is offered. Approved events are outlined in the attached document and include the Melbourne Cup, Australian Open and Bathurst 1000.
