Certificate of Competency (Maritime) - New South Wales

Service summary

You will require this certificate if you intend to act as a master or crew member on a domestic commercial vessel. A domestic commercial vessel is a vessel that is used for commercial, government or research activities (i.e. commercial fishing or trading vessels).

Please be aware that marine engineers and coxswains intending to work on a commercial vessel will also require this certificate.

This certificate will ensure that your experience and qualifications meet the specified job standards on a domestic commercial vessel. It allows you to operate in any State or Territory subject to any limitations of the Certificate.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence you must:

  • complete an application form
  • provide proof of your identity
  • supply two colour passport photos
  • be at least 16 years old
  • meet the minimum sea service requirements and complete the form Application for Qualifying Sea Service Assessment, AMSA 560
  • complete a training course provided by a Training Organisation approved by the National Regulator
  • provide a current approved first aid certificate
  • meet specific medical and eyesight standards by providing a Eyesight Test Certificate and Self Declaration of Medical Fitness or Certificate of Medical fitness for a Marine Qualification
  • provide a completed National Regulator approved task book for the certificate (if applicable)
  • pass a final assessment by a National Regulator approved examiner
  • pay the appropriate fees.

Issued for a 5 years period.
