Private Hire Vehicle Operator Accreditation - New South Wales

Service summary

You will require this accreditation if you intend to operate a pre-booked private hire vehicle service, other than a taxi-cab or bus. For example, pre-booked for general hiring or used for weddings or other special events.

A private hire vehicle cannot stand or ply for hire on any road or road related area. Please note that only cars of a type approved by the Director-General may be used as a private hire vehicle.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this accreditation, you must:

  • Be fit and proper for the purposes of accreditation
  • Possess the necessary knowledge and level of competency to operate a private hire vehicle service
  • Demonstrate evidence of your financial viability from a qualified accountant
  • Show evidence that you have third party insurance to the amount of at least $5 million in respect to any damage which may be caused by your vehicle
  • Nominate the number of vehicles you intend to operate and the make and registration as well as the vehicle identification number (including rented vehicles)
  • Show evidence of any accreditation you may hold for another public passenger service
  • Provide details of the premises in which the vehicles will be kept when not in use
  • Pay the relevant application fees.
