State Regulated Education and Care Service Approval - New South Wales

Service summary

You may require this approval if you intend to operate a business that provides a state regulated education and care service. State regulated education and cares services are services involving the education of, or care for children under the age of six who do not attend school, in the form of:

  • home-based services: provided at the home of the carer
  • mobile services: visits specific premises, areas or places at specified times for the purposes of providing education or care
  • centre-based occasional services: provided at fixed premises other than the home of the carer
  • budget based funded services: does not receive the Child Care Benefit.

If your education or care service does not fall within one of the categories listed above, you may require a nationally recognised approval.

Licence

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Exemptions

You will not be required to apply for a provider approval or service approval if you intend to operate a child supervision service in a shopping centre.

Eligibility requirements

In order to be eligible to provide a state regulated education and care service, you will need to obtain three separate approvals:

  • Provider approval: enables you to apply for one or more service approvals.
  • Service approval: authorises an approved provider to operate a service.
  • Supervisor certificate approval: allows individuals to serve as the nominated supervisor for an approved service.
