Notification of Appointment of Mine or Petroluem Site Operator - New South Wales

Service summary

If you are the owner of a mine or petroleum site in New South Wales, you are required to appoint a mine or site operator and to notify the Agency of their appointment before mining or petroleum operations begin.

You may choose to be the operator of your own mine or site, or to appoint another person to operate the mine or site on your behalf. If you elect to act as the mine or site operator, you must notify the Agency to that effect.

A mine or site operator is a person with the necessary skills, knowledge and resources to operate the mine or site. Their key responsibilities include developing and implementing a safety management system that is used as a primary means of ensuring the safety of workers at the mine or site.

Eligibility requirements

Mine or site operators can be individuals, partnerships, unincorporated associations or a company. To be eligible for this appointment the mine or site operator must:

  • Have the skills, knowledge, experience and resources to exercise the functions of a mine or site operator;
  • Be able to carry out operations at the mine or site;
  • Have management or control of the mine or site; and
  • Be able to discharge the duties of a mine or site operator outlined in the legislation.
