Only persons who are registered under the Teacher Registration (Northern Territory) Act may be employed to teach in Northern Territory schools.
The Teacher Registration Board of the Northern Territory (???the Board") assesses each applicant's qualifications, competence to teach and if the person is a fit and proper person to teach, to determine eligibility for registration or the granting of authorisation to employ.
Under the Mutual Recognition (Northern Territory) Act 1992 and the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act 1997 (Cth), teachers registered with another registration authority in Australia or New Zealand are eligible to register in the Northern Territory provided they complete the application form, pay the requisite fee and provide a certified copy of their current interstate/New Zealand registration certificate and proof of identity.
A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.
Under legislation the minimum requirement for teacher registration in the Northern Territory is a four-year teaching qualification or equivalent.
