Information is available free of charge by conducting a Queensland place names search online at the department website.  Where available, historical information is also returned in search results.

An extract of approved and current names (called the `gazetteer') is available as spatial data for free download from the Queensland Govermment Information Service.

Approved place names are those appearing in the gazetteer/database as approved names.

No fees apply to searching the database online, downloading spatial data, or brief telephone/email enquiries. Enquiries involving one hour or more research will attract a fee.
