Service summary

Fair trading is important to Queensland business. Business operators, charities, associations or cooperatives in Queensland contribute to fair trading in the marketplace and have a number of responsibilities and legal requirements.

To promote and enhance in Queensland a trading environment for consumers and business in which all participants are treated fairly and equitably through:

  • relevant education
  • active consultation
  • vigorous enforcement
  • information dissemination
  • maintenance of public registers, and
  • development of creative legislative initiatives.

The Fair Trading website provides advice to businesses and consumers on the purchase, supply and display of goods and developing good customer relations. If a breach of statutory fair trading law exists, the Office of Fair Trading will require the complainant to lodge a formal (written) complaint.

You can obtain information on consumer and business issues events, initiatives and changes to legislation from the Office of Fair Trading website or by following the Office of Fair Trading on Twitter and Facebook. Please note in most cases the Office of Fair Trading will not respond to comments, messages or posts left on our social media accounts. Complaints should be lodged through the existing channels.

The Office of Fair Trading YouTube channel provides you with an opportunity to view videos and webinars on business and consumers issues.

Through the Smart Business Bulletin, the Office of Fair Trading aims to provide a regular e-newsletter designed to deliver valuable information to Queensland business owners across a diverse range of industries to make sure they stay informed on a range of topics and issues affecting business.
