Security firm licence - Queensland

Description

You will need this licence to operate a security firm service. This licence will be required if:

  • you are a person, corporation or partnership that operates a security firm
  • you receive payment or reward for providing security services, even if you subcontract the actual security work out to other people
  • you supply staff to provide security services.

You can apply to have a class 1, class 2 or combined licence, depending on what services your firm offers.

You are a class 1 security firm if you supply:

  • bodyguards
  • private investigators
  • crowd controllers
  • cash transit security officers
  • unarmed security officers
  • monitoring security officers
  • dog patrol security officers.

You are a class 2 security firm if you supply:

  • security advisers
  • security equipment installers.

Holding a security firm licence does not entitle you to personally perform the functions of a security provider.

Exemptions

You do not need this licence if you:

  • employ security staff to protect your property
  • operate as a sole trader and do all the security work yourself.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible, you must:

  • be at least 18 years of age
  • be a member of an approved industry association
  • be a suitable person.

A criminal history check must be done for each person whose date and place of birth are stated on the application form.

You may be eligible to be licensed under mutual recognition laws if you hold a comparable licence within another Australian state or territory or within New Zealand.

Application process

Apply

Submit a Form 2 with the following documents:

  • for every person listed on the application documents to establish their identity - 100 points required (refer to list on application form) that have been certified and must include at least primary document
  • a criminal history check and fee for each executive officer of a corporation or all partners of a partnership
  • evidence of membership with an approved security industry association, such as the current membership certificate, in the corporation name.

Approval time

Processing time is between four and six weeks

Transfer

You cannot transfer this licence.

Disqualified persons or entities

You are not suitable to hold this licence if you:

  • are currently disqualified from holding a licence or registration certificate
  • have been convicted within the past 10 years of a serious offence
  • are subject to a court-issued control order because of involvement in serious criminal activity.
