This permit is required by commercial tour operator's party on certain designated fossicking land and fossicking areas where camping is regulated by the department under the Fossicking Act 1994.
These areas include:
- Sapphire designated fossicking land (other than prohibited camping land)
- Scrub Lead designated fossicking land (other than prohibited camping land)
- Rubyvale designated fossicking land (other than prohibited camping land) (except within 1.5km radius of Sapphire and Rubyvale Post Offices)
- Divide designated fossicking land
- Reward designated fossicking land
- Middle Ridge fossicking area
- Tomahawk fossicking area
- Big Bessie fossicking area
- Graves Hill fossicking area
- Glenalva fossicking area
- Opalton designated fossicking land
- Duck Creek designated fossicking land
- Sheep Station Creek designated fossicking land
On mining tenements tenure holder's permission is required.
Permit holder must comply with Fossicking Act 1994 and Regulations regarding activities.
A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

- Commercial tour operator
a person who conducts, offers to conduct, agrees to conduct, or arranges for someone else to conduct, a commercial tour.
This permit cannot be transferred.
This permit is issued for a period of no longer than three months per area.

The camping permit does not authorise you to fossick. If you wish to fossick, you can purchase a fossicking licence online, from our regional and district offices or from authorised licence agents.
