Second-hand dealers / pawnbrokers licence - Queensland

Description

You will need this licence to carry on the business of dealing in second-hand goods.

You can either apply for a second-hand dealer licence, a pawnbroker licence or a combined licence. This licence is available to individuals, partnerships and corporations.

A second-hand dealer licence allows you to trade in second-hand goods by:

  • acquiring them
  • selling them
  • disposing of them
  • giving exchanges on them.

You will need a pawnbroker licence if you intend to take security of an item (known as pawn or pledge) from a person or lend a sum of money for a return of profit.

Eligibility requirements

While there are no experience or educational requirements, you must:

  • be at least 18 years of age
  • be a suitable person, which involves undertaking a criminal history check
  • have a registered office in Australia.

You may be eligible to be licensed under mutual recognition laws if you hold a comparable licence within another Australian State or Territory or within New Zealand.

Application process

Submit an application with the following:

  • an original copy of a birth certificate / extract, driver licence or passport
  • a photocopy certified as a true copy by a Justice of the Peace or a Commissioner for Declarations, barrister, solicitor or notary public.

Approval time

Processing time is between four and six weeks

Transfer

You cannot transfer this licence.

Disqualified persons or entities

You are not suitable to hold this licence if you:

  • are insolvent or under administration
  • are an externally administered body corporate
  • have been convicted of a disqualifying offence in the last five years.
