Asbestos removal licence - A class - Queensland

Description

You will need this licence if you intend to operate a business that removes any amount of friable asbestos. Friable means that when it's dry, or as the result of a work process, it may be crumbled, pulverised or reduced to a powder by hand pressure.

Class A licence holders must ensure the removal of friable asbestos is directly supervised by a nominated supervisor. Class A licence holders are also authorised to carry out Class B asbestos removal work.

Holders of this licence must comply with the code of practice 'How to safely remove asbestos'.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Exemptions

A class A asbestos removal licence is not required for the removal of asbestos-contaminated dust or debris (ACD) that is associated with the removal of non-friable asbestos; or is not associated with the removal of friable or non-friable asbestos and is only a minor contamination.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible to apply for this licence, you must:

  • be at least 18 years old
  • have at least three years of relevant industry experience following the completion of the relevant qualification
  • hold certification in CPCCDE3015A Remove friable asbestos and CPCCBC4051A Supervise asbestos removal.

Application process

Apply

  1. Complete the application form and read the guide for asbestos applicants
  2. Submit the application form, supporting documents and fee to Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ)
  3. WHSQ will contact you if any additional information is required
  4. If approved, WHSQ will issue the licence to the PCBU.

Lodgement process

Lodge

The licensed asbestos removalist must give written notice of 'licensed asbestos removal work' to WHSQ at least five days before the asbestos removal work is started.

Approval time

Approval can take up to 120 days. If there is no decision within this time frame, the application is taken to be refused.
