You will need this permit to keep or sell protected animals as part of a business that deals in protected animals. A protected animal includes any species of mammal, bird or reptile which is:
- native to Australia
- migratory and occasionally migrates to, and lives in, Australia
- specified as a protected species in the legislation.
There are two classes of permit:
- a basic permit authorises you to keep and sell protected animals listed in the Regulations as 'basic species', which are defined as being common in captivity and / or in their natural habitat, and which keeping and selling has little impact on naturally occurring populations
- a specialist permit authorises you to keep and sell protected animals of basic species and / or specialist species (specified on your permit), which are not listed though are generally difficult to keep, threatened or rare.
You usually need to hold a protected animal of a basic or specialist species for seven days before selling or giving it away. However, you can obtain special clearance to sell or give away an animal before seven days have passed.
While you will not need a permit to keep a single protected animal, you will need this permit if you intend to sell or give away that animal.
