Class 2 Heavy Vehicle Authorisation Permit - Tasmania

Service summary

You will require this permit if you intend to operate a class 2 heavy vehicle on roads. This permit is required because class 2 heavy vehicles may:

  • Endanger public safety;
  • Damage road infrastructure; or
  • Adversely affect public amenity.

Class 2 heavy vehicles include:

  • Freight-carrying vehicles;
  • Buses;
  • Vehicle carriers;
  • Livestock vehicles; and
  • Performance Based Standards (PBS) vehicles.

This authorisation permit allows the use of a class 2 heavy vehicle to be used on a road only in stated areas, on stated routes and during stated times.

This permit may apply to one or more heavy vehicles.

A heavy vehicle is a vehicle with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) or aggregate trailer mass (ATV) of more than 4.5 tonnes.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this permit, you must:

  • Apply with the approved form;
  • Pay the prescribed fee;
  • Prove that the heavy vehicle under the authorisation permit will not pose a significant safety risk; and
  • Provide any other information requested.

The relevant road managers must also consent to allow the exempt vehicle to travel on their roads.

Conditions relating to the routes, areas or roads that an exempt vehicle intends to travel may be added when granting this permit.

You must ensure that the driver of a class 2 heavy vehicle has a copy of the authorisation permit in their possession while driving.
