Accreditation of a Seed Sprout Producer - Tasmania

Service summary

If you intend to be involved in commercial primary production of seed sprouts you may require this accreditation. Commercial primary production of seed sprouts includes any of the following done for the purpose of supplying seed sprouts to a food business or a seed sprout business:

  • the decontamination of seed or seed sprouts
  • the soaking of seed
  • the germination or growth of seed
  • the harvest of seed sprouts
  • the washing, drying or packing of seed sprouts.

Seed sprouts refer to young seedlings which may be grown from: alfalfa, broccoli, clover, onion, radish, sunflower seeds or other seeds, mung beans or other beans, and snow peas or other peas.

All persons involved in the commercial supply (including production) of seed sprouts must:

  • comply with the Seed Sprouts Scheme as prescribed by regulation and any relevant standards
  • hold an accreditation in order to carry on a business involving the production or processing of seed sprouts
  • prepare and implement an approved food safety program which is audited at least once a year.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this accreditation, you must:

  • if required, prepare and implement a food safety program under the Seed Sprout Food Safety Scheme
  • provide any information required by the Agency
  • complete the relevant form
  • if required, allow the Chief Inspector to make any inspections of premises, plant or equipment as deemed necessary
  • pay the required fee.
