Motor Vehicle Trader Licence - Tasmania

Service summary

You will require this licence if you intend operate as a motor vehicle trader. Motor vehicle trading includes buying, selling or exchanging more than six vehicles in a twelve month period. This licence applies to trading in both new and used motor vehicles. You will not require this licence if you:

  • provide finances for motor vehicle trading
  • purchase motor vehicles for the purpose of dismantling them
  • sell motor vehicles by auction on behalf of their owners
  • operate a park and sell business
  • collect motor vehicles
  • operate as a motor vehicle trader on a wholesale basis.

Employees of a motor vehicle trader are not required to obtain this licence. Please consult the Contact Officer for more information.

To be eligible for this licence you must:

  • be considered a fit and proper person to hold the licence
  • be at least 18 years old
  • be willing to comply with any conditions placed on your licence
  • complete and lodge an application form, accompanied by all required documents.
