Vehicle Trade Plates - Tasmania

Service summary

You will require vehicle trade plates if you intend to operate a business that involves the handling or use of unregistered vehicles or trailers. They may be required by businesses involved in the manufacture, importation, sale, modification or repair of motor vehicles or trailers.

Trade plates are attached to the rear of unregistered vehicles or trailers and permit them to be driven for certain approved purposes, including:

  • Demonstrating or test driving a vehicle;
  • Driving the vehicle from the place of manufacture to the place where the vehicle will be offered for sale;
  • Driving to an exhibition or show to display or trial the vehicle and return; and
  • Moving a vehicle to or from a place where repair or maintenance work is being undertaken.

If approved to use trade plates, businesses must keep detailed records which must be made available for inspection by the Authority when required.
