Registration as a Veterinary Surgeon - Tasmania

Description

You will need this registration if you intend to practise as a veterinary surgeon or provide veterinary services. Veterinary services include but are not limited to the:

  • examination of animals for diagnostic purposes, and the provision of advice, including the prescription of drugs or treatment, on the basis of that diagnosis
  • provision of medical or physical treatment to animals
  • performance of surgical procedures upon animals
  • administration of anaesthetic to animals
  • conducting of pregnancy testing upon animals
  • performance of any artificial breeding procedure upon animals.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for registration as a veterinary surgeon in Tasmania, you must:

  • be at least 18 years old
  • be a fit and proper person to practice as a veterinary surgeon in Tasmania
  • have completed an approved course of study and been admitted to an approved qualification.

If you have completed an approved course of study but have not yet been admitted to an approved qualification, you may be eligible for provisional registration as a veterinary surgeon. This provisional registration will continue until you become registered as a veterinary surgeon, or 6 months after the next meeting of the institution at which degrees, diplomas or certificates in veterinary surgery are conferred.

National Recognition of Veterinary Registration (NRVR) has commenced in Tasmania. If you are registered as a veterinary surgeon in another Australian State or Territory and reside permanently in that State or Territory, you are entitled to practise as a veterinary surgeon in Tasmania on a part-time / casual / locum basis without having to register within Tasmania. You must apply for registration as soon as you become a permanent Tasmanian resident.
