Motor Vehicle Registration - Tasmania

Service summary

You will require this licence if you intend to drive a vehicle on Tasmanian roads. All vehicles (i.e. cars, motor bikes, vans, trucks, etc.) must be registered before being driven. The registered operator may be a body corporate or an individual and they are recorded in the register as being responsible for the vehicle. These responsibilities include:

  • payment of vehicle fees and charges
  • related fines and / or sanctions, unless it can be proven that the registered operator was not using the vehicle at the time of the offence
  • ensuring the roadworthiness of the vehicle
  • notifying the Registrar of any changes to the recorded details.

Certain vehicles and exceptional situations exist whereby vehicles do not require registration to be driven on public streets in Tasmania.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible to register a vehicle, you must:

  • be able to provide evidence of identity, which includes age, residential address and existence within the community
  • provide evidence that you are entitled to become the registered operator of a vehicle
  • pay the prescribed fee
  • be able to demonstrate that the vehicle is roadworthy
  • prove that the garage address of the vehicle is, or will be, in Tasmania.

Please note that if you are registering a vehicle intended for use as a hire and drive passenger vehicle then the vehicle must not display any offensive advertising material.
